General information About activities of the Global Environment Facility (GEF)
In 2011 GEF celebrates the 2th anniversary under the motto «we invest to our planet».
Global Environment Facility is established in 199. GEF is the biggest source of funding of projects on the improvement о Г the global environment. Up to now GEF allocated % 9,5 billion USD which was added with more than 42 billion USD to the joint financing for implementation of more than 2700 projects in more than 165 developing countries and countries with the economy in transition. Via its program of small grants (SGP) GEF has also realized more than 12000 small grants direcLty by non-governmental and public organizations with the overall cost of 495 million USD.
Global Environment Facility (GEF) unites 182 governments of country-Members in partnership with international organizations, non-governmental organizations and pnvate sector- for the solution of the global ecological problems.
As the independent financial organization GEF provides grants for the developing countries and countries with the economy in transition in the Held of projects related to climate change, land degradation, biological diversity, international waters, ozone layer and stable organic pollutants. These projects provide for benefit to the environment linking the local, national and global ecological problems and facilitating the sustainable development.
10 agencies compose GEF: UN Development Program (UNDP). UN Environment Program (UNEP), World Bank, Food and Agricultural Organization, Asian Development Bank, European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and others.
GEF also plays a role of financial mechanism for United Nations Conventions: the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UN FCCC"), UN Convention to Combat Desertification (CCD), Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). Stockholm Convention on stable organic pollutants (SOP).
Uzbekistan cooperates with GEF sinet 1995. Up to present the total sum of projects funded by GEF in Uzbekistan is more than 11 mln. USD. Besides, Uzbekistan participates in realization of regional projects the overall cost of which is more than 51 mln. USD.
Currently, in Uzbekistan the projects on the climate change, land degradation and biological diversity are realized successfully at the national level.
Uzbekistan participates actively in realization of «Central Asian Initiative on Sustainable Land Management (CACILM)» regional project with support of GEF and international organizations.
Due to the new GEF procedures the new prospects for reaching GEF resources under different programs: climate change, biological diversity, land degradation, international waters, preservation of ozone layer and others are on the way.
General information About GEF Expanded Constituency Workshop (Tashkent, 11-13 October 2011)
The main purpose of the workshop is to introduce the National Focal Points of UN Conventions and GEF Focal Points in the countries of GEF Expanded Constituency Workshop with the new procedures of getting GEF funds for realization of the nature protection projects and preparation of project proposals.
UN and GEF National Focal points on the nature protection Conventions of Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belorussia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgiziya, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Switzerland as well as representatives of international organizations - GEF, World Bank, UNDP, UNEP and representatives of non-governmental organizations will take part in the workshop.
At the workshop GEF Secretariat will present presentations on GEF framework, new program approaches in GEF projects implementation for consideration by GEF and on new applications for financing.
New forms proposed by GEF will make it possible to apply for making the project proposals in the most convenient form for preparation of project proposals by the project designers.
The results of several projects implemented under GEF will be considered at the workshop.
It is planned to give the workshop participants an idea about implementation of GEF projects in Uzbekistan for which the field trip to the Samarkand province is organized.
